ARE YOU IN "THE TWILIGHT ZONE"
I am frequently asked if I think a "freebie" period on WW is a good idea. Apparently, this is a pretty common question, because weightwatchers.com posted this article featuring leader Elizabeth Josefsberg.

Tips to avoid The Twilight Zone
  • Reread program materials to keep the details fresh.
  • Write down your Winning Outcome so that you are in touch with your goals and reasons for following the program.
  • Slowly incorporate foods that you deem as "bad" into your daily routine by carefully planning for and counting them.
  • Take a baby step. This week record everything that you ate during the twilight zone without assigning POINTS values to the indulgence. This small step can evolve into full awareness in just a couple of weeks. After a week or two, assign the POINTS values, and eventually try to portion control and track.
  • When you feel the urge to "check out," rely on an anchor (a strongly connected object, like a piece of clothing that you would like to fit into) that will remind you of your true goals.
ARTICLES OF NOTE
Any polished, seamless performance requires practice and advance preparation. When we want to maintain control of our weight-loss efforts - at a party, in a work environment, or at another gathering, we'd like to behave as if we're "in the moment" - as if our healthy actions are effortless.

Control can be an issue for all of us, and we can take control with a great sense of ease when we have done our "homework." Come to the meeting this week to see that practice makes perfect!

Have a great week, everyone! Sorry this is a day late - I got in late (and exhausted!) from the Brickyard yesterday.

DEAR DIARY: DOUBLE MY WEIGHT LOSS, PLEASE!
One of the most effective weight-loss actions is LIFTING a pen! This week the news reports confirmed something that we Weight Watchers already knew: you can lose more weight by keeping a food diary. In a recent study by the Kaiser Permanente Center, participants who kept food journals more than five days a week lost almost twice as much weight as those who didn't. And perhaps more impressively, they kept the weight off. It didn't matter if it was a pen and ink journal on paper, an on-line journal or just a text message or email sent to yourself. Check out the ABC
news video or read the story. And yes, that IS a Weight Watchers Quik Trak Diary featured in the ABC news video!

ARTICLES OF NOTE
It's important for us to understand our eating patterns - the specific times of day when we usually eat. How often we eat is related to how satisfied we feel. If we skip meals or snacks, hunger may increase (drop below the Comfort Zone), or we may feel less satisfied. This week we will explore two types of eating patterns - structured and unstructured - and develop some strategies for making our own patterns work for us.

Have a great week, everyone!

MORE ON PORTIONS
From More for Me by Sydnie Meltzer Kleinhenz

Monty jumped right out of bed. "I want breakfast, lots!" he said. He quickly dressed. He could not wait to find out what would fill his plate.

Monty said, "Is that my toast? There's just one slice. I want the most! More More More, I want a lot!" He pushed away the plate he got.

His sister hid behind the door. She neatly cut the toast in four. "Now, look," she said, "you have a lot. " So that's what Monty thought he got.

Then Monty said, "What's in my cup? I'll swallow once and drink this up. More More More, I want a lot!" He pushed away the cup he got.

His sister poured every drop into a thin glass, filling it to the top. "Now, look," she said, "you have a lot." So that's what Monty thought he got.

Monty said, "I see four chunks. I like to have a lot more hunks. More More More, I want a lot!" He pushed away the bowl he got.

His sister slowly shook her head. She chopped the chunks to bits instead. "Now, look," she said, "you have a lot." So that's what Monty thought he got.

Then Monty frowned and banged his spoon. "My cereal will be gone too soon!"

His sister did not pour or slice. She scooped out half and served him twice. "Now, look," she said, "you have a lot." So that's what Monty thought he got.

When Monty's breakfast reached an end, his sister said, "No more pretend. I'll give you lots since that's your wish." She gave him every dirty dish. Then Monty cried, "This stack's too high!" His sister grinned...and helped him dry.
